Once you've experienced Rio Grande turkey hunting, Kentucky-style, you'll have it in your blood from then on out.

Kentucky turkey hunting – especially for the Rio Grande turkey – is very exciting and quite a challenge. It is very rewarding to experience what turkey hunting has to offer, whether a successful hunt has been had or not. Outfitters in Kentucky will work to accomplish both for you.

We expect the 2012 spring Rio Grande turkey-hunting season in Kentucky to provide great hunts and success. Kentucky guides and experts have witnessed a noticeable increase in a good population of jakes this spring, which should result in a high number of two-year-old birds. Most Rio Grande Turkey enthusiasts expect a great hunt in Kentucky generally, but 2012 is stacking up to be a phenomenal season.

Some Kentucky-based guides have even hunted Rio Grande turkey in Kentucky for decades, and have turkey hunted in several states for various subspecies. Many provide eager sportsman with the perfect opportunity to snag that prize Rio Grande turkey with a hunt in Kentucky, but others participate in cross-state hunting sprees, in nearby states such as Alabama, Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Nebraska, Indiana, Illiniois, Tennessee, South Carolina and Texas.

Rio Grande turkey hunts, in particular, are great for those just starting out turkey hunting, those who have never hunted them altogether, or the experienced alike. Many Kentucky outfitters clientele are first-time Rio Grande turkey hunters, hunters who do not have good areas to hunt, or hunters who have not yet bagged that first long beard.
Rio Grande turkey hunts in Kentucky begin at first light, typically after a gobbler is roosted the night before. If success is not found shortly after fly down, hunters shift gears and move to known areas that the turkey will use. This may include strut zones, dusting bowls, fields, ridge tops, or bottom areas. As the day progresses, the game plan will change as the gobblers do. Early to mid-afternoon can provide some of the best Rio Grande turkey action there is to find. With sportsmen in Kentucky being able to hunt from sunrise to sunset, often an old long beard can be fired up late in the evening, on his return to roost and his attempt to assemble hens for the following days’ breeding regiment.

Don't forget Kentucky has a fall Turkey hunting season. Archery runs from early September through mid January. A week shotgun season occurs in both October and December, and Kentucky guides and outfitters average fall turkey hunts by the day, at the rate of $200, give or take depending on the region.
