Like other reindeer, caribou are larger than true deer these animals have very broad hoofs to help support them when in deep snow and soft tundra. The antlers on Caribou are very broad much bigger then true deer, males antlers grow much larger then female caribou. Female Caribou is the only deer in America that has antlers. There are two main types of Caribou Barren Ground and The Woodland Caribou. Large herds of Barren Ground Caribou move far across the arctic tundra from Newfoundland to Alaska. Alaska and the Yukon herds have been estimated at over 2,000,000 of the Barren Ground Caribou. Bulls can weigh over 300 pounds, and stand 4 feet tall and over 6 feet long. Woodland Caribou are much darker and larger than the Barren Ground Caribou. Many experts have said the largest Woodland Caribou are a third type, called mountain caribou that’s what makes this Caribou highly sought after by hunters. Having a good hunting guide or outfitter is essential in harvesting the Woodland Caribou, with these caribou weighing over 400 pounds. Woodland Caribou grow to 8 feet long with some weighing more than 700 pounds. These Caribou are found in Nova Scotia and Newfoundland to British Columbia with very few Woodland caribou living in the extreme northern United States outside of Alaska. Eskimos and northern Indians depend heavily on these majestic animals for food, clothing and shelter along with other necessities these Caribou provide.
