Whitetail Deer Hunts

Pursuing the South Dakotan Whitetail Deer

South Dakota is a killer spot for snagging that dream trophy whitetail so many hunters fantasize about. With its beautiful terrain and all sorts of whitetail hunt opportunities, South Dakota sets the stage for a superior hunting experience.
In under a week of hunting, most South Dakota outfitters or guides will have shown you at least several whitetail trophy bucks, so be sure to familiarize yourself with shooting of your rifle or bow, so you can make that fatal shot when the whitetails do emerge. As many experienced sportsmen can attest, a hunter loses his bragging rights about when he misses a big shot; however, hit or miss, the evening stories of South Dakota whitetail adventures are still told. Traveling to a hunting camp generally isn’t difficult in South Dakota; there are some great publicly accessible, whitetail-heavy lands available for you hunting pleasure!
Also, remember that airlines provide regular service to Rapid City – a springboard for many of South Dakota’s most popular outfitters, offering affordable whitetail hunting in a scenic part of the country. Additionally, there is a smaller airport with about a 3,500-foot runway located at one of South Dakota’s more strangely named towns, the city of Wall.
If you’re considering a South Dakota whitetail excursion, but don’t know which outfitter you’ll go with yet, there are some essentials for whitetail hunting that you simply must have, no matter your guide or outfitter. Some crucial items for a South Dakota safari include a rifle (in the .30/06 class with scope and sling), ammunition, binoculars, camera and film, hunting boots, mixed clothing for changing weather, a thermos with plenty of water, and of course, your personal items necessary for such a trek.
In most regions of South Dakota, the rifle season typically begins on the second Saturday in November, whether or not you’ll be hunting whitetail. Archery starts the last days of September and runs through the end of December, with many South Dakota hunting guides offering whitetail hunting trips up to a whole week. Secure your hunt quickly and get the details and procedures for licensing; now is the best time, as South Dakota hunting can be a popular attraction, especially for whitetail hunts! Hunting guides are usually happy to send you the necessary applications. Your best shot for acquiring a license is to apply for the “special buck.”
Big game rifle licenses in South Dakota are chosen via lottery. The first application window begins in April, and unlimited archery tags are sold. You can find more detailed South Dakota licensing information at http://www.state.sd.us/gfp/. Aside from whitetail hunts, South Dakota outfitters also provide archery deer hunts, as well as wild turkey, grouse, pheasant, coyote, and prairie dog, but most expert hunters prefer the thrill of pursuing whitetail!
