Hunting in Colorado for Mule Deer, Elk and Antelope

Walz
Guide Service offers guided hunts on Deakins Ranch in Craig Colorado for
Elk, Mule Deer Bucks and Antelope Bucks. Deakins Ranch has entered into
a cooperative program with the Colorado Division of Wildlife.
The Walz crew has served as outfitters since 1960! The Ranching for Wildlife
program guarantees the ranch a share of hunting licenses along with customized
season dates. The ranch agrees to develop and improve wildlife habitat
within the ranch boundaries.
Guaranteed
Licenses: We have guaranteed licenses for Elk - either sex, Mule Deer
bucks, Antelope bucks. Game can be harvested by any legal method. Our
clients are not required to draw licenses from the Colorado Division of
Wildlife's preference point lottery, and will not lose any preference
points by using a Ranching for Wildlife license. Hunters furnish their
own licenses, bedrolls, and personal effects. References will be furnished
upon request. A hunters safety card is needed to purchase licenses if
born on or after January 1, 1949. We can purchase your license with appropriate
license fee, copy of your drivers license, and a copy of your hunters
safety card.
Antelope
Hunts: Guaranteed licenses (No draw required) The Deakins Ranch has
some of the finest Antelope hunting that Northwest Colorado has to offer.
We have a very large population of resident and migratory animals. Our
average Antelope harvested has a 13"-15" main beam, with an average B&C
gross score of 75. We provide either a 3 or 5 day hunts with a full service
camp. This hunt is an excellent opportunity for both the novice and experienced
hunter. You will have several chances to harvest a mature buck. For Archers,
we have proven pit blinds set up around key watering areas. Currently
we enjoy a 100% success rate on all of our antelope hunts.

Mule Deer: Guaranteed licenses - No draw required. We have a 90-day
hunting season, which allows us to hunt all three stages of the rut. The
ranch has a large population of both resident and migratory Deer, and
has a 98% success rate for Deer harvested over the past three years. We
try to harvest only mature bucks 24"-30"+. The average Mule Deer harvested
is a mainframe 4x4 with a 24"-27" spread that will B&C gross score 160s-170s.
Every year we harvest some 27"-30"+ mule deer that B&C gross score 180s
or better.
Elk
Hunts: Guaranteed - either sex licenses. The Deakins Ranch is a major
wintering range for a large population of Elk. We receive approximately
50 licenses from the CDOW every year, and our clients are not required
to draw a permit from the CDOW preference point lottery, and they do not
lose any preference points with the Ranching for Wildlife Permit. Our
average Bull Elk harvested is a 5x5 and will B&C gross score around 250.
Every year we do harvest some 6x6 bulls that B&C gross score around 300.
We do all of our hunting out of four-wheel drive pickups and this provides
an excellent opportunity for our older clients. If you like to hunt on
foot, our guides can handle that too. We will hunt you to your ability.
Accommodations: We provide a full service camp for your comfort
and enjoyment. Good food and hot showers are provided. We enjoy our hunting
on 26,000 acres of private land in GMU #301 with an elevation of 6,500
feet. Four-wheel drive pickups with experienced guides well acquainted
with the area are used on all hunts, with a 2:1 hunter guide ratio. We
will hunt you to your abilities using stalking and still hunting methods.
