Hunting for Deer and Turkey in Iowa

Deer Hunting in IowaFinn-Wing Hunting is located in Taylor County in southwest Iowa. This is the heart of prime deer country. The terrain of rolling hills, timber interspersed with corn, and soybean and alfalfa fields lends to an unparalleled environment. This is also prime turkey country. Flocks have been increasing at a rapid rate. Bill Cruth is owner and manager of Finn-Wing and has over 30 years of southwest Iowa hunting experience. Bill will do preliminary scouting and guide you to prime locations. Bill knows the terrain, the wildlife patterns, and the effects different weather conditions have on them.

Deer Hunting: Iowa Bow Season is extremely underrated. There is very little pressure on the deer during this season. With numerous deer trails though the timbers, there are many sites suitable for deer stands. Previous clients highly recommend this season because there is, at the minimum, 90% shot opportunity.

Black powder: a nifty way to pursue Iowa deer. As with bow season, there is not much pressure on the deer. Out-of-state hunters are eligible only for the second season. We encourage hunters to consider these two seasons. The fall foliage with crisp fall mornings makes for a wonderful time to visit southwest Iowa. The December shotgun seasons are always full of excitement. The crops are out and the deer are moving. The herds are bunched, and I repeat, it is exciting. Whether you are in a tree with a musket or bow or on a deer drive, hunting at Finn-Wing always presents challenges and shot opportunities.

There are many trophy bucks, but no trophy fees. One of our policies here at Finn-Wing is to ask that our guests come in at least one day early at no cost to do scouting on their own. We feel that everyone should have the opportunity to survey our land and choose the site most suited to him.

Turkey Hunting in IowaTurkey Hunting: Spring Turkey season is fast becoming one of Iowa’s most enjoyable hunting seasons. Turkeys are becoming our predominate wildlife species in terms of sheer numbers. The hardwood timbers are just a part of the perfect habitat for these wily birds. This year, Iowa Turkey season is from April 16 to May 20. The hatch in 1999 was excellent. These birds are now two-year old gobblers. They are just right for this year’s spring harvest. Since Iowa allows hunting until sunset, the late afternoon hunts are a great option.

Hunting Lodge: Lodging is provided in our hunting cabin. It features 3 bedrooms with sturdy bunk beds and very comfortable mattresses. There is a large living room with easy chairs, and cable TV. It also has a fully-equipped kitchen for your convenience with extra refrigerators and freezers. There are laundry facilities in the lodge as well. We usually serve a full evening meal. For lunch time there is hot soup to go with your sandwiches. Breakfast is an early fix-it-yourself affair.
