Mackay Bar Ranch has been in operation as a Elk and Mule Deer Hunting and Fishing Lodge and Outfitting business for over 40 years. Located on the banks of the Wild and Scenic Salmon River it is totally within the Frank Church Wilderness area. Our fully accommodated cabins, rooms, and lodge are a great place to launch your wilderness hunting/ fishing trip from or just hang out relax and enjoy the excellent service and awesome scenery. We offer something for every outdoor enthusiast in a beautiful, pristine, and historical, setting.




Access: Fly in and land on one of the best back country airstrips in the Salmon River Canyon, or Jet boat up 28 miles from the end of the road out of Riggins Idaho. Many visitors stop by while rafting down the river. There is a seasonal 4 wheel drive road that gets you to within 1 ½ miles of the ranch and we can meet you on ATV's from there. We can arrange all transportation to and from the ranch.

Available Hunts: We offer pack in, big game hunting trips. Hunt Elk, Deer & Bear on the same hunt - additional cost of the tags. If you tag out early, come back to the lodge and hunt Chuckar or fish for Steelhead for the remainder of your time - additional cost of boating.

Camp: Once you arrive at the lodge it's a 15 mile ride to our main hunting camp. Our stock is gentle, sure footed, and trail wise. Our wranglers & guides are experienced in the area and work hard to make your hunt comfortable, & successful. We have a professional cook at camp to prepare hearty, delicious meals. Special diets can be accommodated with advanced notice.

Drop Camp: We provide drop camps for archery hunting during the rut in an area with little hunting pressure. We can use your gear or ours, and our stock and staff to take you back set up camp and bring you and your game out later.


Guided Hunts: fully furnished, providing everything but your personal gear. Sleep peacefully in the bunk tent and wake up early to visit the cook tent to prepare for an exhilarating day of hunting. We leave the comforts of camp each morning and ride to an area chosen for the days hunt. The morning ride takes anywhere from 30 minutes to 2 hours, it is common to come upon game very close to camp. Unless you want otherwise we try to move the stock to different pick up locations to minimize walking. Our guides will work from sun up to sun down in any weather but the amount of hunting and the pace are up to you.




Hunting Area: in units 19, 19a, 20, and 20a and encompasses approx. 270 square miles or 117,612 roadless wilderness acres. We scout yearly and hunt from the camp that has the most promise and we have harvested some outstanding bulls. If you draw a tag we can provide you with an excellent Big Horn Sheep Hunt, and we will provide drop camps by jet boat.

Fishing: In the spring and fall we offer Steelhead Fishing trips. Stay at the lodge and get a jump on the good holes up river. Transportation in and boating for Fishing is provided if wanted. We are also located very close to the South Fork of the Salmon for some excellent summer fly fishing for cutthroat and Rainbow Trout. As well we have several high mountain lakes in our area and can arrange for a summer pack trip for fishing and wildlife viewing.

Other Activities: Jet boat tours, horse back riding, photography, swimming, or just relaxing.
