White Mountain Outfitters offers hunts for Elk, Deer, Bear, and Mountain Lion
in the rugged Great Burn Wilderness area of the Lolo National Forest in western
Montana's Bitteroot range. We use horses and mules on all of our spring
& fall hunts to pack into backcountry camps that allow us to hunt remote areas
where trophy animals are found. I cannot guarantee you will be successful at taking
an animal, but I can promise you a trip with White Mountain Outfitters will be
an exciting wilderness hunting adventure you will never forget.
Elk
Hunting: Western Montana along the Idaho border. We offer both archery hunts
and rifle hunts. All of our hunts are done out of pack-in backcountry camps. Our
camps have improvements for your comfort during your hunt. We cater to the hunter
that wants a solid no frills hunting camp, but yet wants to enjoy it too. Gentle
horses and mules are used to access these camps. When possible we will use the
horses and mules to access the daily hunting areas, but most of the hunting is
done on foot. It is important that you be in good physical shape for these hunts,
as it will add to the success of your hunt. We will try to give you the best trip
as humanly possible, for a reasonable price.
Deer
Hunting: Western Montana along the Idaho border. This area offers excellent
populations of deer. Although mostly whitetail deer are taken, mule deer can also
be found and are hunted with a limited number of permits. We offer both archery
hunts and rifle hunts. All of our hunts are done out of pack-in backcountry camps.
I have been guiding archery and rifle hunters in Idaho and Montana for over 16
years. Hope to see you this year!
Bear
Hunting: Spring and fall black bear hunts take place from our backcountry
camp located about 6 miles from the trailhead. We access this camp by horse and
mule, which is about a 2-hour ride into camp. The state of Montana does not allow
the use of dogs or bait while hunting bears. The spot and stalk method is used
here. In the spring we glass the southern slopes and grassy areas looking for
bears as they merge from their winter dens. In the fall we basically use the same
method although we will hunt the high basins and large berry batches as the bears
start stalking up their fat reserves before they start their winter hibernation.
Both mature bears and color-phased bears can be taken.
Mountain
Lion Hunting: Our trophy lion hunts take place in the month of December. We
use 4x4's and snowmobiles to locate crossing lion tracks in the maze of old logging
roads and drainages located in our winter game range. Once a suitable track is
found, then we turn loose our proven lion hounds, "and the chase is on." The chase
may last thirty minutes or it could go all day. Depending on where the lion trees,
if possible we try to cut the distance using the vehicles and then travel by foot.
The adrenaline rush and the "thrill of the chase" you will experience on a lion
hunt is one you will remember forever.
