Montana Whitetail Deer Hunting: A Sportsman’s Dream
Hunting whitetail deer in Montana is, for some, the ultimate hunting expedition. The beautiful, clear skies and sprawling, vast lands of Montana provide for unmatched camping, hunting, and fishing – among many other pleasurable outdoor activities – but the Montana whitetail takes the prize for the absolute best Montana hunting experience! Many experienced and skilled outfitters in Montana offer superior rifle hunts for whitetail deer on private ranches, with some offering bowhunting-only whitetail pursuits in pristine, whitetail-dense, river-bottom areas! With thousands of acres of private land, these outfitters can offer a very successful rifle hunt from tree stand hunting to the open Montana prairie, where some big whitetail bucks call home; many of these Montana whitetails are a real challenge for sportsmen! Some Montana outfitters specialize in archery hunts specifically for whitetails, and they focus most of their advertising to that market. However, many often have awesome whitetail deer rifle hunts on private leases, and some allow for both bowhunting and rifles. Don’t be fooled by a perceived limitation of river-bottom land available to rifles, as there are an abundance of mature, trophy-class whitetail Montana bucks in these areas, where bow hunting them is a challenge fit for the best hunters around. Huge regions of thick willows, divided by small meadows and few trees and bordered by vast expanses of agriculture, make for some awesome Montana whitetail habitat. This environment makes for tougher bow-hunting conditions, and slightly easier gun hunting. Most rifle stands for hunting whitetail are placed along the edges of large thickets bordering open meadows, where whitetail movement can be observed in these openings between willow thickets. Other Montana outfitters have large tracts of more open habitat outside the river bottom, which holds some impressive trophy whitetail bucks as well. These areas are most productive when sitting on hillside watches, overlooking brushy creek bottoms surrounded by open prairie or sage brush, or draws leading from bedding cover to agriculture in the vast prairie land outside the river bottom. Early morning and evening watches are the most productive during late October in Montana. During November, all day can be very productive when mature whitetail bucks lure estrous, whitetail does into smaller secluded thickets in these vast open areas outside the river bottom. Hunting whitetail deer in Montana is the experience of a lifetime. With a variety of environments, plenty of whitetail for hunting, and some expert hunting guides and outfitters, Montana should be any sportsman’s first choice when pursuing whitetail.
